In a recent newsletter we shared the following quote:

To stay ahead, you must have your next idea waiting in the wings.
~ Rosabeth Moss Kanter, Harvard professor and leadership expert

We love this quote because it’s a powerful reminder that success in business isn’t static, it’s about momentum. Having that “next idea” ready means you’re not waiting for opportunities to come to you, you’re actively creating them. It’s about staying curious, paying attention, and thinking one step ahead.

The question you might be asking yourself is how do you spot these opportunities for growth and change? How can you evolve your business?  How do you even come up with ideas?

We get it, being business owners means we are often very busy. We wear many hats and are often caught in the day-to-day without giving ourselves the time and space  to think about improving our processes, launching new offers, or expanding our offerings in meaningful ways.

Here’s the thing- as Rosabeth Moss Kanter points out, momentum is what helps your business thrive in the long run. Setting aside even a small amount of time to reflect on growth opportunities can make a big difference.

Here are a few ways you can start spotting opportunities to grow and evolve your business, even when you’re at your busiest.

Listen to your customers/clients- Your customers are often the best source of new ideas. Paying attention to their feedback can give you a lot of insight. What are their pain points? What are they asking for? What are they struggling with? For example, say a client says they wish you offered a class on social media marketing, maybe that’s the sign you need to create such a class. A thoughtful business owner will take into consideration clients’ comments, noting them down to think about later. This source for ideas and inspiration is invaluable.

Regularly review your offerings- We already know how quickly things change.Take AI, for instance; suddenly industries everywhere are shifting how they work based on AI. The businesses that adapt are the ones that will stay ahead. If you’re not regularly checking in on your offerings,  there is the risk that you deliver services or products your audience has outgrown.

Surround yourself with creative and innovative people- We have discussed the benefits of networking  and also of joining a mastermind. Being part of these kinds of groups can often help you see opportunities you might otherwise have missed.

A successful business doesn’t stand still, it grows, evolves, and meets the moment. Take this as your reminder to pause, reflect, and start thinking about what your next idea might be.
